Some betting tips for the NFL

March 8, 2013 in 360 News

Of course the most important tip to remember when it comes to NFL betting – as with pretty much all forms of sports betting – is that you need to maintain up to date information about the NFL in order to make successful bets. This means keeping on top of the form of the teams and any injuries to top players that could affect their chances. It is also important that you make bets only with established, reputable sports betting sites, because otherwise you run the risk of not getting paid, even if your bet comes through.
Another key tip when it comes to betting on which side will win the AFC, NFC or Super Bowl is to wait until the season is underway before making your bet, as sometimes the teams which are hotly tipped before the start of the season fail to live up to those expectations – which can prove costly for those betting. An example of this would be the Broncos last season, who were amongst the favorites for the Super Bowl, but failed to even make it to the play-offs. You might also consider betting on a wild card team, as in recent seasons a number of these have gone on to success in the post-season. Read the rest of this entry →

Keys to Victory vs. Tennessee

The Jets travel to Tennessee tonight to take on the Titans, who are losers of three straight and have an overall record of 4-9.

Key #1 – Contain Chris Johnson

Johnson remains the Titans top threat on offense, he is capable of scoring from anywhere on the field at any point in the game. After a slow start, Johnson has come on strong and is over the 1,000 yard mark for the fifth straight year to start his career. It’s been well documented how the Jets have had trouble stopping the run this year. They are ranked 26th in the NFL giving up an average of 136.5 yards per game on the ground. The key to stopping Johnson starts with the Jets Outside Linebacker’s setting the edge. If Johnson gets outside, there is a good chance he will make a big play. The Jets need to shuffle him inside and swarm him with several defenders.

Key #2 – Run to set up the Pass

The Jets have basically reverted back to running a high school offense the previous two weeks. They are back to ground and pound, and it is working. It may not be the prettiest style of football, but it is the only way the Jets can be successful with their group of skill players. In the past two games they have run the ball a total of 85 times, with a combination of Shonn Green and Bilal Powell. Much like the Jets, Tennessee struggles to stop the run, giving up an average of 127 yards per game. If the Jets are successful running, it may set up the play-action pass and possible a big play or two down the field.

Key #3 – Keep Locker in the pocket

When you think of running quarterbacks you think of Michael Vick, RGIII and even Tim Tebow, You wouldn’t necessarily think of Jake Locker, but he has ran for 213 yards on over eight yards per carry. When escaping the pocket he is averaging 9.9 yards per scramble and he has also had a lot of success completing the deep ball this year. However, Locker is still a young developing player and therefor is still very mistake prone. In the Titans last three losses in a row he has turned the ball over 9 TIMES! 9 TIMES! (All Ferris Buehler fans will appreciate that). Historically the Jets have feasted on young quarterbacks under Rex Ryan. So if the Jets can make Locker a pocket passer, it could be a long night for him.

Prediction – I expect both teams to have similar game plans coming into this contest. It’s obvious that both teams are going to try to protect their young quarterbacks by trying to run the ball. The Jets must slow down Chris Johnson if they want to win this game, it’s been over a month since Johnson has gone over 100 yards on the ground, so you know he will be hungry. The main reason for this has been the inconsistency on the Titans offensive line, since training camp they have changed 4/5′s of their line. I think the Jets defense will continue their strong play, especially on 3rd Down and the offense will make a play or two against a soft Titans defense. Jets 20 Titans 13

Braylon is back!

December 11, 2012 in Jets News, Roster Changes

In a very fan-friendly move, the New York Jets have decided to bring back Braylon Edwards for what will be a three game audition for the remainder of the season. Edwards was in the news last week when he infamously tweeted “Don’t blame Sanchez. I played there. Blame the idiots calling shots. Mark is a beast and will probe it when given a proper chance” in a show of support for his former quarterback. The following day Edwards was placed on the injured/waived list by the Seattle Seahawks.

With a depleted receiving corps, the Jets obviously felt it was worth taking a flyer on Edwards as they were rewarded him on waivers just moments ago. Edwards will provide a familiar face to Quarterback Mark Sanchez, something he hasn’t had a lot of this season.  The two are still very close off the field and had a lot of success together in 2009 and 2010 before the Jets let Edwards go to free agency. Edwards was the Jets leading receiver in 2010 catching 53 balls for 904 and 7 Touchdowns.

Despite not having much (if any) success the past two seasons with San Francisco and Seattle, the Jets are hoping that Edwards will spark what has been a morbid group of receivers this season. Assuming he is healthy, he gives them an immediate threat down the field, something they have not had all season, and with the injury to Stephen Hill there is a good chance that he may start on Monday night vs. Tennessee.

Jets to start Sanchez vs. Jacksonville

December 5, 2012 in Jets News

In what came as no surprise, Rex Ryan announced this morning his decision to go with his guy Mark Sanchez this weekend, despite benching him vs. Arizona. Ryan has been a Sanchez supported the whole season despite his poor play, reiterating over and over that “Mark gives us the best chance to win football games.” My question to you, the readers, do you believe him? I don’t know if I necessarily do, I think this decision has more to do with the franchise trying to save face because they don’t want to give up on Sanchez yet. By benching him for the remainder of the season, they are admitting that drafting him #5 overall and giving him a massive contract extension were the wrong decisions.

Analyzing an UGLY Day for Sanchez

December 5, 2012 in 360 News, Jets News

First and foremost, I’d like to introduce myself to the FansTurn community, and I wanted to preface my first post by stating that I have been a life-long Jets fan. My name is Joe Lacalandra, I am 24 years old and from New Jersey. I am aspiring to work in sports media, specifically broadcasting, and this is my first ever blog. I hope you enjoy my posts, not only will be informative but they will also be objective.

Breaking down the 3 Interceptions

#1 – Ironically, Mark’s first pick came on the Jets first play from scrimmage. Could the Sanchez naysayers have scripted it any better? The Jets come out with Stephen Hill and Jeremy Kerley at WR to start the game and Bilal Powell in at RB and Konrad Rueland at FB. It is a play-action fake and a 5 step drop for Sanchez. The Cardinals counter with a 5 man rush, blitzing both Middle Linebackers. Sanchez does not recognize the blitz, which has been a recurring theme with him, and the Jets do not keep extra blockers in to help. Initially the line holds up, Sanchez had nearly 4 seconds to unload the ball which is more than enough time. That’s the start of the problem with this play; the other part is that Sanchez is completely locked in on Jeremy Kerley the entire time. He never scans over the field to notice his other receivers. He compounds the problem by holding the ball too long and forcing the ball into coverage while falling away. Ultimately the ball in intercepted by former Jet Kerry Rhodes. If Sanchez had looked underneath he had Powell and Rueland both open underneath the Cardinals zone defense. This is just an inexcusable mistake by a 4 year veteran, especially since the Jets on their own 13 yard line!

#2 – The Jets were quietly putting together a nice drive to this point. The play happens at the Arizona 40 yard line, late in the first quarter and again on 1st down. The Jets line up in a Shotgun formation, but have two TE’s both flanked to the right side of the formation. The Cardinals blitz one again by sending their two middle linebackers right up the middle. The Jets again, do a pretty solid job of picking up the blitz with Shonn Green doing a nice job in protection on the free blitzer. Unlike the first interception where Sanchez held the ball too long, this time he rushes the throw as he senses the blitz. Sanchez thinks he has TE Jeff Cumerland open down the seam. But he never sees Kerry Rhodes, as he comes up from his safety spot to make another easy interception. Rhodes was basically waiting for Sanchez to throw it in his direction as he was playing centerfield on the play. It was another poor throw by Sanchez as he threw it low and too far to the middle of the field for Cumberland. He never had a chance to make a reception. Once again the blitz up the middle gets the best of Mark, and a once promising drive ends in a turnover.

#3 – Just two drives later comes the third interception, this time the Jets are faced with a 2nd and 6 from their own 14 yard line. The Jets have a tight formation with two TE’s and just Chaz Schillens lined up as a flanker to the right. This is a three-tier route design by Tony Sparano with Keller running underneath, Cumberland running about a 15 yard out to the right, and Schillens running a GO-route deep down the middle of the field. This time the Cards rush just four men, and Sanchez has enough time to scan the field. He actually does a nice job of side stepping to create a clear pocket and throwing lane for himself. He makes the correct read by unloading the bomb to Schillens. When Sanchez makes the throw, he is open and it looks like the Jets are going to have a big play. However, Patrick Peterson had other ideas. Peterson is such a great athlete that he is able to close on Schillens at the last second and swoop in and steal this one away. The throw is right on the money and Schillens appeared to have the ball initially, but Peterson comes over the back and takes it away making an incredible interception. Unlike the first two interceptions, this one you cannot fault Sanchez for.

Final thoughts on Sanchez’s performance which ultimately led to his benching:

This was a performance that has become all too familiar to Jet fans with Sanchez. In his four seasons with the Jets, he has been consistently inconsistent, if that makes sense. Sanchez did some nice things, especially in the first half, but his propensity to turning the ball over landed him on the bench in the 2ndhalf. Sanchez at times looks like a competent starting QB, but far too often he is making the same mistakes. He has poor pocket presence, which is attributed to his mediocre footwork. When the defense brings pressure, especially up the middle, he looks lost. This was the case on his first two interceptions. When he has a clean pocket, he is fully capable of delivering a well-timed strike to his intended receiver. Who isn’t? But as is case in the NFL, you are not always going to get a clean pocket, and you can’t blame the offensive line for this. The offensive line has done a pretty good job in protection this year. You would like to see some improvement from a four year starter, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening. Sanchez now has turned the ball over, 18 times in 12 games this year. It’s hard to win that way.

Week 8 Preview: Jets vs. Dolphins

October 28, 2012 in Jets Game Previews

Hurricane Sandy is on the minds of everyone in the New York area. Before Sandy can do her inevitable damage, the Jets need to do their own damage to a division rival. There has been a lot of chatter back and forth between the Jets and the Dolphins leading up to this matchup and frankly I am sick of it. I am ready to watch a football game, let the talking be done on the field.

Coming off the excruciating loss to New England the Jets can ill afford another loss at home today. A loss would make them 3-5 going into their bye week on the outside looking in, in what is a weak AFC this season. Although the Jets are a better team then Miami, this is never an easy game. These two teams hate each other we know that, and when that is the case it is always a tough game. I would love nothing more then to see the Jets stick it to the Dolphins today. For a team that has not won anything in quite a long time they really have a lot to say. Look for the Jets to shut up these losers today with a strong defensive effort. Rookie Demario Davis will have a coming out party as he replaces the injured Bart Scott. Jets in an ugly game win 21-10.

Jets inactives: Bart Scott, Greg McElroy, Bilal Powell, Eric Smith, Damon Harrison, Jeff Cumberland and Kenrick Ellis.

Sione Po’uha returns today, and Joe McKnight will be available as well.

Crucial Mistakes Lead to Jets Demise

October 23, 2012 in Jets Games

This one hurt maybe as bad as any regular season loss has ever hurt. Down 10 entering the fourth quarter, I thought this is the Jets there is no chance they make a come back, ESPECIALLY in New England. Well, in pure Same Old Jets fashion they climbed and scratched their way back into the game, took the lead with 1:30 to play and still found a way to lose.

This game really tested my sanity the entire day. It could not have started better for the Jets as they were able to drive 76 yards early in the first quarter and take a 7-0 lead. Everything clicked for the offense on this drive, Sanchez was hitting his spots and they were able to pound the ball straight up in the middle on the Patriots defense. This giddy feeling could not have been taken away from us more quickly. In something I have not seen happen in years to this team, when Devin Mccourty took the ensuing kickoff for a TD to tie the game at 7.

From here the Patriots got the ball back and proceeded to drive straight down the field and make it 14-7. On the next offensive drive for New York, Matt Slauson decided he was not going to come off the line and attempt to block Vince Wilfork. This resulted in a misstep from Sanchez and Greene on the handoff which turned into a safety for New England. At the time, this felt like a back breaker but the defense stepped up in a big way for the remainder of the half. Mark Sanchez made one of his only bad throws of the day late in the second quarter. Stephen Hill got open on a pump fake by Sanchez, and Mark just inexplicably under threw him. It was intercepted by New England and most likely prompted many “Tebow supporters” to start stirring things up. The defense continued to play well and Nick Folk was able to drill a 54 yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

The first drive of the second half is when another crucial Jets mistake took place. The offense came out sharp getting the ball down to the 3 yard line for a 3 and 1. The Jets had run the ball straight up the middle on the previous 2 plays for 9 yards. So, it is 3 and 1 with a chance to get a short goal line opportunity so you have to run the football right? Tony Sparano disagreed, having Sanchez come out in shotgun and throw a slant to Chaz Schilens. The drive ended up resulting in a field goal. I could understand throwing the ball under one condition. Play action roll out looking for Dustin Keller. Tony Sparano is to blame for having absolutely no feel for the game, but where is Rex here? Rex should be in Sparano’s ear there either saying run the football or play action to Keller which has been bread and butter at the goal line for 3 years now. But nope, I guess Rex was too busy figuring out how his great defense would once again blow a late 4th quarter lead.

On the next New England offensive drive the Jets defense looked gassed from keeping the team in the game in the first half. New England was able to take a 23-13 lead which seemed insurmountable at this point for the Jets offense. But, Sanchez had different plans. On the Jets 14 play 92 yard drive Sanchez was 9/10 for 90 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown pass to Keller was an absolute bullet where he thread the needle beautifully. This made the game 23-20 with just under 6 minutes to play. The Jets were in need of a quick 3 and out from their defense, and the defense delivered.

The Next offensive drive involved the mistake that may have cost the Jets the game. After Shonn Greene had to leave the game because of a head injury, Joe McKnight was able to come in and make some big plays with is legs. The Jets were able to get to the 27 yard line just before the 2 minute warning and were facing a 3rd and 3. Sanchez hit Stephen Hill in the chest at about the 13 and he dropped the football. Not only would it have given the Jets who were moving the ball at will a first down but, also the ability to kill more clock. If Hill catches that ball the Jets maybe win the game with a TD. Folk did tie the game at 23.

The next kickoff was the Mccourty fumble that looked as though the Jets were going to win this game in remarkable fashion. Again Tony Sparano had the whole world scratching their head. On 1st and 10 for the 18 with 2:01 left on the clock Sparano removed the red hot Sanchez in favor of a run for Tim Tebow. If there is ever a time to throw the football in this situation it is when the clock stops on the next play no matter what! Instead Tebow ran for a whopping 3 yards. On third down the Jets attempted a play action when Sanchez was sacked. On this play, Kerley was going to be open and slipped on the 5 yard line as Mark was going to throw it. The rest of the game was almost predictable. The Jets did not kick the Patriots when they were down and you cannot give a team like them life. Brady easily led the team for 2 field goals one at the end of the 4th and one of the win in OT.

This was the most painful Jets loss since the AFC championship in 2010. It really looked as though they were going to make a great comeback but they just could not close it out. Sanchez was unbelievable and anyone saying that he played a bad game should be looking for a new job. If the Jets had won the game like Sanchez put them in a position to do the headlines would have been how he outplayed Brady. But, because Rex’s defense could not come up with a stop Sanchez is the goat, totally absurd.

I blame a lot of this horrifying loss on the coaching staff. When will Rex Ryan learn that a 3 man rush at the end of the game is ineffective. For the ninth time in the Ryan era the defense allowed a score on the final drive of regulation to either force ot or lose the game. That is absolutely terrible. And on the offensive side of the ball, Sparano had a brutally bad game especially on the 2 play calls I talked about earlier.

Keys to a Jets Victory

October 21, 2012 in Uncategorized

Traveling to Foxboro and getting a win is no easy task for an NFL team, but in recent history the Jets have shown it to be possible. The last time the Jets won in New England was in the 2010 divisional round of the playoffs and they are ready to get back on track today. Here are some things that are going to need to happen for a win.

Offense: Last week the Jets displayed their formula to victory and it was pretty simple. Run the ball well with Shonn Greene. If Greene is able to run the ball effectively, this will in turn make Sanchez better. Running the ball up the middle at will like the Jets did last week will not be an option with all-pro Vince Wilfork parked there. Whether or not Joe McKnight (Game-time decision) plays will make a difference in the game plan. Running outside the tackles will need to be a focus today. The Patriots secondary has been dreadful so far this season. Sanchez MUST take advantage of this. For the Jets to win Mark is going to have to play his best game of the season.

Defense: It all starts up front with the defense today. The run must be stopped and Brady needs to be pressured, if he is standing back with time he will pick any defense apart. The key guys here are Muhammed Wilkerson and Quinton Coples. If these 2 guys can play as well as they did last week against Indy the Jets can win this football game.

A lot is going to have to break right for a Jets win today, but I think it is possible. With the right game plan and big plays from certain players it will happen.

Rex Ryan believes NY Jets can beat New England Patriots

October 19, 2012 in Jets News

It would appear Rex Ryan likes the Jets’ chances against the New England Patriots. The confident coach has been fairly quiet in the first six weeks of the season, but he’s rolling out the fighting talk right now, putting on a front ahead of the Patriots match.

“They know that I think we’re going to beat them,” Ryan has said. “I recognize that they’re a great football team and Belichick’s a great coach. I’ve never once said that he wasn’t. But again, we’re not going to back down or concede anything.”

Despite the Patriots being the preseason favorites to win the AFC East, their performance thus far hasn’t inspired much hope. Something the Jets’ are clearly going to take advantage of. Ryan’s not planning to relax on partycasino.com and have a beer though, because he recognizes the match between the bitter rivals won’t be an easy win. He fully expects the opposition to give as good as they get.

“We’re coming there to take our swing. We’ll see if we land that punch to win the game,” he said.

The Jets, Patriots, Bills and Dolphins all currently stand at 3-3, which Ryan joked meant “we’re also tied for last.” And while the Patriots have turned their performance around in the past, it gives the Jets and the rest of the division hope for their own performances. That said, we mustn’t forget they are still the team to beat in this division.

Rex Ryan said on the subject: “They lost three games. That’s probably more than they normally lose in a season, but we need to worry about ourselves more than anybody else.”

The Jets have added Yeremiah Bell and LaRon Landry to their safeties, which in theory could cause some disruption to New England’s tight end double act, Aaron Hernandez (who has just returned from an ankle injury) and Rob Gronkowski. However, this is one of the games where the loss of Revis is huge, he would have been able to go one on one with any of the Patriots receivers and have made them invisible for the entire 60 minutes.

Jets Run Game Dominates in Rout of Indy

October 17, 2012 in Jets Games

Following this game there would be no question as to who should be playing quarterback for the Jets because Mark Sanchez got what he needs to succeed, a solid run game. Sanchez only had to throw the ball 18 times because of 252 yards from the Jets on the ground.

Sanchez was efficient in his 18 throws, not turning the ball over and throwing 2 touchdown passes in the redzone, an area that has been an issue for Mark so far this season. Sanchez has shown through out his career that he is at his best when complimented with a strong running attack. I do not take this as a slight on Sanchez just that he is not Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers. Mark proved once again Sunday that he is more then capable of helping this team win games.

Shonn Greene came out on Sunday afternoon and shut down any notion that his job could be in jeopardy. Greene played the best game of his 4 year career. 161 yards rushing was a career high as well as the 3 tds. Joe Mcknight also contributed in the run game with a 61 yard scamper that set up a touchdown for the Jets. But, what would a Jets game this season be without a key injury? Mckinght and third down back Bilal Powell both suffered injuries and will be out this week at New England. Mcknight will be missed on kickoffs, and Powell will be missed in pass protection and out of the backfield on third downs. Powell has been somewhat of an unsung hero recently as he has done an excellent jobs picking up blitzes in the backfield.

The story of the day for the Jets was breakout games, just ask rookie Quinton Coples. Coples entered the game with 0 sacks and left the game with 2. He finally came out and looked like the guy the Jets thought they were getting with the 16th pick in the draft. His presence improved the whole pass rush as even Wilkerson joined in with a sack of his own. If not for a bad rookie mistake Coples could have had 3 sacks on the day. One sack was negated by a facemask penalty, something that needs to be avoided if the Jets have intentions of toppling the Patriots. Cromartie was once again spectacular. He had a TD called back on a bogus penalty but the interception stood. If Cromartie can continue to play at this level it minimizes the loss of Revis slightly.

Sunday was a step in the right direction for the Jets but Indianapolis was a team the Jets were supposed to beat. Now the real test is on the road in New England. If the Jets get the same contributions from key players they will have a good chance of beating the mighty Patriots.
