NFL Betting: Jets Need Offense To Produce As Regular Season Begins

The window of opportunity for the New York Jets is wide open…to succeed or fail. Opinions about Rex Ryan’s bunch range from his team being a potential Super Bowl contender to a team that is ready to implode. Unfortunately, the scales are tipping towards the pessimistic side right now as the Jets performance in the preseason – particularly the offense – has been abysmal.

The good news is that exhibition games count for absolutely nothing and the Jets can start off their season positively with a win on Sunday. They’re favored to do so by the odds makers but those making their NFL picks aren’t so sure about the New York Jets.

Buffalo Bills @ New York Jets
Betting Line: Jets -3

The Jets get a very manageable task is Week 1 as the Buffalo Bills visit. While the Jets offense has received a ton of flack for their preseason impotence, the Bills first stringers didn’t do much better. They scored just three touchdowns and a field goal in 16 possessions and looked completely inept at times.

While the Bills spent plenty of money on their defense in the offseason, their offense nosedived in the second half of the 2011 season and there’s little indication that it’s turned around. They’ll be starting a rookie at left tackle when they visit East Rutherford, which should make the Jets pass rush very happy. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick’s mechanics have gone awry ever since the Bills signed him to a $59 million contract extension last season and it hasn’t looked improved in the preseason. If the Jets can harass him – as they do most quarterbacks – they’ll give their offense plenty of opportunities to succeed.

The pressure is on the Jets to deliver this season but they start the season with the perfect measuring test. Win it and the wolves will back off for a week and let the team focus on football. Lose and the pressure will only ratchet up for Mike Tannenbaum, Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez.
