This offseason the Bills made the the biggest splash this side of Peyton Manning by landing coveted defensive end Mario Williams. When this move was made my first thought was how will he be stopped in the two games against Buffalo. The question might be better phrased how will they contain Williams. Because the matchup comes in week 1 Williams injury problems will not play a role in this game. The Jets I hope are making this their number one priority on offense. It is going to start with establishing the run game early and often. By feeding the ball to Shonn Greene it minimizes the amount shotgun will be necessary. That of course is if the run game can be successful. This is incredibly important especially in this game with Williams lurking on the end. By running the ball effectively the Jets will be able to run more off of play action and out of run packages to limit Williams effectiveness.
On plays that Williams is lined up over Austin Howard, which will probably be often, he is most certainly going to need help. This help will come from either a tight end as an extra blocker, John Conner, or Shonn Greene. Am I confident any of these guys will be able to slow down Williams? Not exactly. This is going to be the game changing match up for the Jets on Sunday. Will they be able to stop Mario Williams? There is not much else outside of Marcell Dareus to be concerned about on the defensive side of the ball for the Bills. If Williams can effectively be taken out of the game the Jets will have a good shot to move the ball well against Buffalo and win their 6th straight against the division rival.
