Running back Chris Johnson will be released by the Tennessee Titans today according to NFL Insider Adam Schefter. When the three time pro-bowler becomes a free agent, the Jets are expected to show serious interest.
Reports have stated that the Titans have been trying to trade Johnson for several weeks with no success. The team would save 6 million dollars towards the cap by releasing him.
Johnson would add a much needed big play ability to the Jets backfield. The Jets are desperately lacking the pure speed that he possesses and can use him in a variety of roles if Johnson is willing to take a complementary role.
Despite averaging a career low 3.9 yards per carry last season, CJ2k still accounted for 1,422 yards of offense and 10 total touchdowns.
John Idzik has been known for his methodical approach, and un-willingness to give out lucrative multi-year contracts to free agents. Especially for someone who is 28 and coming off of his worst pro season.
The Jets interest will likely hinge on whether Johnson is willing to split carries with incumbent Chris Ivory and sign for a reasonable amount of money.
The 28 year old has rushed for at least 1,000 yds in each of his first 6 seasons, including 2,006 yards in 2009.
